The Walk for Hunger Event Details

Each year, on the first Sunday in May, Project Bread creates a mobile city for over 40,000 friends who roar forth, rain or shine, to help the hungry. These Walkers — along with their donors and Volunteers — help fund over 400 emergency food programs throughout the state. With the economy struggling and unemployment still on the rise, your help is needed more than ever.

Here's a look behind the scenes at what it takes to put this event together each year:

Population:

40,000+ Walkers and 2,000+ Volunteers

Sites:

9 checkpoints

Police Dept:

100 police in 5 municipalities

Crossing Guards:

600 Stationary Marshals supervise route

Medical:

 9 First Aid stations, 7 ambulances on call, EMT and medical personal on bikes, and a Lost Persons tent

Convenience:

394 portable facilities

Water: 

10,000+ gallons of water at 10 water stations

Hot Spots: 

Performing groups and individual musicians at 12 entertainment stops along the route

Snack Stop:

30,000 snack bags

Telecommunications:

Cell phones, portable landlines, and 75 ham radio operators

Curfew: 

6:00 P.M.

Transport: 

54 free shuttle buses

Public Works: 

400 hand-painted signs

Recycling/Trash:

32,000 recycling and trash receptacles

Public Servants:

More than 2,000 Volunteers

Public Health:

300 gallons of sunscreen
