Communications Manager


Project Bread connects people and communities in Massachusetts to reliable sources of food while advocating for policies that make food more accessible—so that no one goes hungry. In collaboration with key partners, we deploy a two-pronged approach to achieve this goal by providing immediate relief to those who are hungry today and working to eradicate the systemic causes of hunger.

To assist us in meeting our mission to permanently solve hunger, Project Bread – The Walk for Hunger is seeking a Communications Manager to join our growing team, on the frontlines of the current hunger crisis. An estimated 1 in 6 households are now food insecure (17.3%), as compared to 1 in 11 in 2018 (9.3%). Our strategic focus on sustainable, people oriented solutions, as well as federal nutrition programs, means Project Bread is playing a central and leading role in COVID response.

The Role:

The Communications Manager is a newly established role, reporting to the Assistant Director of Program Communications and working closely with the other four members of Communications team and cross functionally, throughout the organization. This position offers an exciting opportunity to shape the role and help Project Bread scale the impact and efficiency of our communications to people experiencing food insecurity, as well as to our partners, legislators and donors.

The person bestsuited for this position is exceptionally organized, thrives in a fast-paced work environment, possesses a meticulous attention to detail, has the ability to successfully prioritize and manage multiple duties, works collaboratively, and is committed to bringing an equity and inclusivity lens to all work. The position is responsible for keeping projects on track and on budget, managing relationships with various vendors and partners, and supporting high quality communications to increase awareness for food resources and programs and the Project Bread brand in Massachusetts.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Project manage Communications and Development departmental projects. Including statewide, integrated communications campaigns and events to build visibility for Project Bread’s programs, initiatives, thought leadership and fundraising efforts.
    • Develop and implement processes for communications initiatives to improve workflow and increase visibility within the organization to ongoing work
    • Coordinate with internal and external partners including, project briefings, deliverables and correspondence, successfully completing critical aspects of deliverables with a hands-on approach
    • Develop comprehensive project plans, monitor/track progress of various projects, and evaluate communications initiatives for future optimization
    • Serve as day-to-day contact for external partners, including Project Bread’s creative agency, gathering information, contributing to overall strategy
  • Create materials and collateral to support communications and awareness initiatives
    • Write, edit, and proofread content as necessary, including social media, blog posts, flyers, newsletter content, press releases, talking points, and other public facing content
    • Support strategy and content development and planning for campaigns and updates to Project Bread websites
    • Facilitate Public Relations initiatives and events
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed
    • Maintain organized design files, photo library, story bank, and related communications record keeping
    • Assist with regular reporting on deliverables to Project Bread leadership and funders


Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the annual Walk for Hunger, including working as event staff the weekend of the Walk, attending pre-Walk events as assigned, and supporting The Walk for Hunger fundraising efforts
  • Participate in organization-wide events and meetings and perform other program duties as assigned
  • Participate in one organizational task force

  • Impeccable attention to detail, strong prioritization skills, and ability to multi-task and change priorities quickly
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining processes that streamline work of the Communications team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills a must
  • High level of interpersonal skills, self-possession and emotional maturity a must
  • Understanding of brand identity and good eye for graphic quality
  • Facility with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram)
  • Thorough knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required, familiarity with Adobe suite soft-ware preferred
  • Able to cultivate professional relationships and contribute to a positive work environment
  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of two to three years of relevant experience or equivalent professional experience
  • Two-year commitment preferred


Project Bread offers a competitive salary and terrific benefits. The anticipated salary range for this position is $55 – 65,000 annually. Benefits include Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO and Dental, Flexible Spending Accounts, Life and Long-Term Disability, and contributions to T passes and health club membership. Unlimited Paid Time Off. All employees are currently working remotely, and will not return to the office until it is safe to do so. At that time, the Communications Manager will need to be present in the East Boston office on a regular basis.
