On Monday, our team beat out the stormy weather for a late morning visit to MacDonald Stadium where the Malden Public Schools Food Truck made the first stop of its daily rounds. The Malden Food Truck makes four stops, Monday through Friday, around Malden to distribute Summer Eats meals to kids and teens!
Summer Eats provides free meals for kids and teens at hundreds of sites across Massachusetts. Participating partners, including Malden Public Schools and the Mystic Valley YMCA, help to fund meal sites, which provide anyone under the age of 18 with a free meal a day at Summer Eats locations.
During the event, kids and teens ran over from the Malden recreation sports clinic and families brought children from the neighborhood to receive free lunch, a hot chicken sandwich, serviced by school nutrition staff. Congresswoman Clark and other attendees joined in serving meals to the dozens of children and teens at the site.
Assistant Speaker Clark continues, "As Americans continue to recover from the pandemic, Democrats are working every day in Washington to lower costs for families and provide immediate solutions to those need, including free meals for students in need.”
We were proud to see a strong contingent of state legislative support for Summer Eats and to be able to support our Malden Public Schools partners preparing meals and feeding kids each day!
Special thanks to our attending partners: Massachusetts Senator Jason Lewis; State Representatives Kate Lipper-Garabedian, Paul Donato, and Steven Ultrino; Liam Horsman, Regional Director, Office of U.S. Senator Edward J. Markey; Malden Mayor Gary Christenson; Shannon Raymond, Training Coordinator for Special Nutrition Programs, and Kristina Webber, School Nutrition Programs Coordinator with DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education); Martine Cherry, Regional School Nutrition Program Branch Chief, USDA; Malden Superintendent Ligia Noriega-Murphy; Malden Public Schools Finance Director Toni Mertz; Jennifer Spadafora and Adam Weldai of the Malden School Committee; and Kate Filteau, Assistant School Nutrition Director for Malden Public Schools.
