Now Jacoby Ellsbury [stats] can really be the toast of the town.
The Red Sox [team stats] center fielder was at the House of Blues yesterday to unveil ZinfandEllsbury, a $14 bottle of wine with sale proceeds supporting anti-hunger group Project Bread, the Navajo Relief Fund and the Ellsbury-Read Project, a child-abuse prevention program.
“I have been blessed, not only to be a professional athlete but to be able to give back to the less fortunate,” Ellsbury said. “It took me a while to pick the charities, but these three are close to my heart and it’s exciting to make an impact in someone’s life.”
Charity Wines debuted in 2007 with Manny Being Merlot, Schilling Schardonnay and Tim Wakefield [stats]’s CaberKnuckle. The effort sold more than 250,000 bottles. The response spurred production of Vintage Papi, Jason Varitek [stats]’s Captain’s Cabernet and Kevin Youkilis [stats]’ SauvignYoouuk Blanc.
The Winchendon-based organization expanded beyond Boston and baseball, and has raised more than $1.4 million for charities selected by athletes.
Josh Beckett [stats], who was scheduled to launch ChardonK with Ellsbury, was unable to attend yesterday’s event due to an injury during batting practice. His wine will support the Josh Beckett Foundation.
